Inculcate Healthy Eating Habits
Reduce Dependence on Weight-Loss Surgeries and Drugs: Experts

Since the online delivery of fast foods or junk foods has taken a toll on the health of youngsters, for whom the home-cooked food was the last preference, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in association with the State government was taking several precautionary measures and organising health awareness as well as training camps for the physical and mental health nourishment of the youths. With the rising obesity leading to several health disorders among the youths, the PAU has started a gym practice session for the girl students today.
Welcoming the first batch of 40 students in the gym today, Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, underscored the importance of inculcating healthy eating habits and regular exercise for nurturing the over-all body. An old saying, “Health is wealth” should be the priority of the Gen Z, he advised the youths, while, suggesting the addition of fresh fruits, vegetables and pulses to the diet for the healthy heart, mind, soul and body. Stating that every business (hotels and restaurants as well as food delivery) had its own merits and demerits, Dr Gosal called upon the youths to mend their eating habits by preferring home-made foods prepared using fresh ingredients and supplying essential nutrients, and restrict the consumption of unhealthy food items ordered via diverse food delivery apps to special occasions only.
Dr Rishi Pal Singh, Registrar, said that the wellness gym, comprising all the latest exercise machines, has been established with the monetary support of the State government, who were extending all-possible help to PAU to cater to the academic and sports requirements of the youths.
Dr (Mrs) Kiran Bains, Dean, Colleges of Community Science and Basic Sciences, emphasized on developing healthy mindsets of the youths to navigate the ongoing challenges of life.
Dr Nirmal Jaura, Director Students’ Welfare, urged the students to consume nutrition enriched diet over oily foods, harming the overall health. “Reduce dependence on weight-loss surgeries and drugs (medicines), and switch over to regular walks and exercises to keep your-selves physically and mentally fit,” he advised the students.
The gym trainer Sehajpreet Kaur provided wellness tips to the girl students on the opening day.
Dr KS Suri, while proposing a vote of thanks, also highlighted the importance of the good health and hailed the health-conscious mindsets of the girl students joining the gym on the first day.
Present on the occasion were Mrs Kamaljit Kaur, Deputy Director (Physical Education-PE); Dr Sukhbir Singh, Coordinator gym and Assistant Professor (PE); Dr Paramveer Singh, Assistant Professor (PE); and Mr Gurteg Singh, hockey coach.
